AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Residents in and around Richmond County may see or smell smoke in the area Tuesday due to a planned prescribed burn.Land managers are burning about 1,000 acres, with work expected to wrap up around 6 p.m.Prescribed fire is a common tool used in Georgia to clear out dry brush and excess vegetation that can fuel dangerous wildfires. It also helps keep forests healthy and improves wildlife habitat.Smoke may be visible during the burn and could linger into the evening, depending on wind and weather conditions. Officials say this is expected and part of the planned operation, not an out-of-control wildfire.People with respiratory issues may want to limit time outdoors if smoke drifts into their neighborhood and keep windows closed until the air clears.
