Buford woman convicted of scamming seniors out of $1 million, Gwinnett County DA says — Augusta Technology news

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A Buford woman has been convicted of scamming seniors out of around $1 million, the Gwinnett County district attorney said. Starting in 2021, Fataoumata Keita, 48, scammed seniors as part of a larger operation. She convinced her victims their computers were malfunctioning and that they needed to buy antivirus software. They would then be directed to a 1-800 number, where conspirators posing as customer service representatives told the victims to mail checks to a post office box in Buford. Keita would then pick up the money and distribute it to her co-conspirators. The scam racked up as much as $1 million. Keita was convicted of violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. She will be sentenced in December.
